  1. Curriculum

Our Teesville Curriculum

The curriculum is what is taught in school. The teachers plan what they are going to teach each term in their teams, using the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and the National Curriculum, together with the children’s interests, knowledge and expertise to make sure that all children receive a broad and balanced curriculum which is appropriate to their needs and stage of development.

Our Ambition

At Teesville Academy, our children are at the heart of our curriculum. We have high expectations for all our pupils, and our vision is that they are the best versions of themselves. We believe that the central aspect to achieving this, is making sure we foster pupil’s well-being, so they believe in themselves, and they can achieve goals, both academic and personal. It is our responsibility to make sure every child develops the personal attributes of kindness, integrity, generosity and honesty, to help them to grow up, into well-rounded, successful and happy adults, with an understanding of healthy relationships. Our school motto is ‘Include, Respect, Inspire, Suceed’. All pupils, regardless of ability will experience a broad, balanced, ambitious and stimulating curriculum, rich in first hand experiences. This curriculum celebrates their local heritage and provides them with the skills, knowledge and understanding of their world ready for the next part of their educational journey.

Implementation of our curriculum

Thinking, designing and subsequent documentation, developed since 2019, ensures our curriculum is coherently planned, organised and sequenced, so the acquisition of new knowledge and skills are progressive, enabling pupils to learn more, do more and remember more. Personal, Social, Health and Emotional development (PSHE), and Relationships Education, along with Literacy and Numeracy, underpins all aspects of the curriculum and learning at Teesville. We are committed to using innovative ways to engage and enthuse learners.

Quality texts are used to drive up standards of literacy and make links into the wider curriculum. An enjoyment of books and a love of reading is fostered throughout the school. This enables our pupils to acquire a wide range of knowledge and skills, in readiness for their next stage of education.

Determination to make every child a reader has underpinned our philosophy since Summer 2021 when a thorough reading review identified some areas for development in our approach. Our response, particular to early reading has shaped our approach to teaching across the whole day. Our afternoon curriculum has been designed to ensure that pupils are exposed to a wide and interesting curriculum offer, supported to learn more and remember more, and at the same time enhance their reading skills.

National Curriculum

From Year 1 to the end of Year 6 the children are taught according to the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 and 2. This was changes significantly in 2014. Children are now assessed against new Government expectations and if they are achieving well are said to be working at 'expected standards'.

The National Curriculum is currently made up of 3 core subjects
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science

These subjects take up the largest part of the curriculum. In addition, there are eight foundation subjects:
  • Design and Technology
  • History
  • Geography
  • Art and Design
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Computing
  • Languages

At the end of Years 2 & 6 children’s progress in Reading, Writing, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar and Mathematics is assessed through a series of tests known as SATs. These results are reported to parents together with comparative information.

Our school has developed a curriculum which encompasses the statutory requirements of the 2014 curriculum alongside key skills and is led by four key drivers. These drivers were decided upon through consultation with all staff, and children at the time. These are non-negotiable aspects of every theme or topic delivered across the year.
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the world
  • Creative Development
  • Communities and Rights Respecting School.
  • Personal, social and emotional development.
